Lucas School House goes on the record

Lucas School House has its first live recording.

For sale now at the box office of the concert venue and event center is "Live at Lucas School House," a recording of St. Louis singer-songwriter Geoff Koch's tour kickoff there a few months ago. The disc, which follows his previous "Throwing Rocks at Your Ghost," is also available for sale at Koch's website, www.geoffkoch.net.

"Geoff was getting ready to go on the road for a national tour and wanted to have something to bring with him to sell," says Lucas School House's Jan Christian Andersen. "So it was a great opportunity, not only while he was kicking off the tour but also in getting some live tracks down to help him on the tour. And it went off without a hitch. It was a great way to get things rolling."

Lucas School House digitally records all concerts unless the band requests otherwise and plans to continue to be a place where artists can record their music live. Cowboy Mouth's Paul Sanchez recorded there with John Boutte and Beatin' Path. That will be released on CD as well.

Lucas School House co-owner Dan Jameson says they have a 24-track recording capability, in which music is recorded to a digital hard drive. He compares it to a soundstage or studio, and pointed out that each instrument and vocal can be isolated, as a real incentive to artists. The intimate room itself is a bonus.

"The room's acoustics are a natural for performances," Jameson says. "The high ceilings and wood floors resonate well. There's really something about the room that sounds good for acts. Every performer who comes in enjoys the sound the room delivers.

"The only problem is when a band gets too loud, when they're not playing to the room. We have to manage that. They're not playing the Pageant. They don't have to project that far."

With Lucas School House's growing popularity, live recordings are surely going to increase.
